Older Adult Inpatient Program Overview

In our senior adult inpatient psychiatric program in North Port, Florida, patients receive compassionate care from our multidisciplinary staff to help them stabilize and manage their immediate behavioral health needs. Patients can also work to identify available support systems and build coping skills that help as they move forward on their healing journeys.

Patients typically spend seven to 10 days in our older adult inpatient program, and this short-term experience is designed to help them address crisis needs, access immediate support from qualified professionals, and receive a plan for continuing care.

Therapies & Services

At our North Port, Florida, hospital, we understand that patients often have a range of physical and behavioral needs when they seek care with us. Our inpatient psychiatric program offers multiple medical and mental health services and therapies to support needs specific to the senior adult population, including:

  • Basic medical care: Basic medical care is provided by family nurse practitioners at the time of admission and then as needed for follow-up.
  • Medication management services: Patients receive daily medication management services from registered nurses who distribute their medication and monitor the effects.
  • Family therapy: Family therapy is provided by master’s-level clinicians on an as-needed or as-requested basis.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy is the primary care method used in the older adult inpatient program at our North Port, Florida, hospital. Patients participate in four hours of group therapy each day, which can consist of process groups, psychoeducational groups, and medication education groups. These sessions are led by master’s-level clinicians, registered nurses, and certified therapeutic recreation specialists.

In our older adult inpatient program, one of the main treatment modalities we use is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is a form of therapy that helps patients recognize and confront negative thought patterns and replace them with more positive ones. In therapy, clinicians utilize CBT to guide discussions on topics such as daily living skills, enhancing motivation, and how to develop healthy coping habits.

Continued Healing

Inpatient care is often the initial step on someone’s healing journey. However, moving from a structured environment to independent living can be challenging. At North Port Behavioral Health, we provide support services to help ensure a smooth transition out of inpatient care that encourages continued healing.

We believe that effective care considers each stage of a patient’s healing journey. Beginning on a patient’s first day in our senior adult inpatient program, our expert staff develops a comprehensive and individualized discharge plan that may include resources such as step-down and outpatient mental healthcare services, family support groups, and psychiatry services.

During someone’s time in the older adult inpatient program at our hospital in North Port, Florida, we encourage them to actively participate in their care and continue working toward long-term healing after they leave our hospital. Our committed staff strives to provide transformative healing experiences to inspire patients long after their time with us has come to an end.
